(The following is the June 14 devotional from my Next Step Devotions book. Before reading it, I suggest you read Romans 1 and pay close attention to verses 18-20.)
God’s general revelation to all humankind confirms that there is a God. One aspect of that revelation is the creation itself. David wrote, “The heavens declare the glory of God, and the expanse proclaims the work of his hands” (Ps. 19:1). Paul, likewise, attests to the impact of creation: “For his invisible attributes, that is, his eternal power and divine nature, have been clearly seen since the creation of the world, being understood through what he has made. As a result, people are without excuse” (v. 20).
Evangelist Ray Comfort comments on Romans 1:20 by noting that seeing a building is proof of a builder, and seeing a painting is proof of a painter. In light of this, Comfort writes, “The same principle applies with the existence of God. When I look at creation, how can I know that there was a Creator? I can’t see Him, hear Him, touch Him, taste Him, or smell Him. How can I know that He exists? Why, creation shows me that there is a Creator. I couldn’t want better proof that a Creator exists than to have the creation in front of me. I don’t need faith to believe in a Creator; all I need is eyes that can see and a brain that works.” *
Not everyone acknowledges the universe as a creation of God. Some reject such thinking as naive nonsense. They are unconvinced by evidence that fails to meet their criteria for consideration. Perhaps they believe in the scientific impossibility that nothing created everything. They may think that a Big Bang explosion countless years ago somehow brought order rather than the chaos resulting from every other explosion that has ever happened. But as one book title suggests, I Don’t Have Enough Faith to Be an Atheist. **
Next Step:
Go outside and marvel at God’s creation. Pause to inspect plants, trees, grass, insects, animals, birds, the sky, bodies of water, and more, at a deeper level than you usually do. Praise God for his creative work.
