(The following is the October 28 devotional from my Next Step Devotions book. Before reading it, I suggest you read Hebrews 11 and pay close attention to verses 1-40.)

Christians should read Hebrews 11 aloud regularly. It is sometimes referred to as the “hall of faith” or “faith hall of fame” and is among the Bible’s most inspiring chapters. It reminds us of our ancestors in the faith and encourages us to follow their example. As we read it, several truths stand out:
“Without faith it is impossible to please God, since the one who draws near to him must believe that he exists and that he rewards those who seek him” (v. 6).
Faith demands that we follow where God leads, even if we aren’t sure where he’s leading us (v. 8).
God’s promises to his children will come to pass no matter how impossible they seem (vv. 11, 19).
It’s better to “suffer with the people of God than to enjoy the fleeting pleasure of sin” (v. 25) and to consider “reproach for the sake of Christ to be greater wealth” than anything this world offers (v. 26).
People whose hope is in God will endure what is necessary in this life to receive their ultimate reward (vv. 35-38).
Faith perseveres even though we may not see its fulfillment in this life, for we know God has provided something better for us (vv. 13, 39).
Given such models of faith and perseverance, how can we do less than follow their example? By walking in their footsteps, we may also become models for those watching us.
Next Step:
Read Hebrews 11 aloud. How does the example of these faithful men and women inspire you to endure troubles and uncertainties? What act of faith is God calling you to do?
