(The following is the June 27 devotional from my Next Step Devotions book. Before reading it, I suggest you read Romans 10 and pay close attention to verses 14-17.)
Are your feet beautiful? Paul describes how anyone can have beautiful feet: “How, then, can they call on him they have not believed in? And how can they believe without hearing about him? And how can they hear without a preacher? And how can they preach unless they are sent? As it is written: How beautiful are the feet of those who bring good news” (vv. 14-15). That last sentence echoes Isaiah 52:7: “How beautiful on the mountains are the feet of the herald, who proclaims peace, who brings news of good things, who proclaims salvation, who says to Zion, ‘Your God reigns!’” We welcome those who bring good news, and there is no better news than the gospel of Christ.
The passage reminds us of the prophet Samuel’s anointing of David as king and what humans see in others compared to what God sees. Samuel first noticed Eliab's impressive physical stature and presumed he might replace King Saul. “But the Lord said to Samuel, ‘Do not look at his appearance or his stature because I have rejected him. Humans do not see what the Lord sees, for humans see what is visible, but the Lord sees the heart’” (1 Sam. 16:7). The Lord also sees beautiful feet that the world might fail to notice.
Beautiful feet to the Lord belong to people eager to bring the good news of Christ to others. The heart moves the feet, and then people go to the lost. Others hear the message, believe in Jesus, and call on his name. Beautiful feet are not picture-perfect feet ready for a modeling assignment. They reflect a compassionate heart and are busy taking the good news to those who need to hear it.
Your feet may not win a beauty contest, but they can be beautiful to God and those to whom you bring the gospel of Christ.
Next Step:
Who was instrumental in sharing the gospel with you? Thank God for them by name. If possible, thank them personally. Pray that God would let you be similarly instrumental in sharing Christ with others.
